SC orders ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’ to release

Despite being the center of attraction of controversies, ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’ has received a positive verdict from the Supreme Court. All set to be released back in 2015, the movie however, met with tremendous protest from Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Akal Takht. Dealing with the life and works of Guru Nanak, the SGPC and Akal Takht have all accused the film to have sensitive elements. Already cleared the procedures of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the movie however, was unable to release, post-controversies. While producing the final verdict on the case, the apex court commented that CBFC’s decision would remain final. It must also be added that, SC has ordered States to ensure proper release being provided for the film.

Initially planned to be released in April 2015, ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’ ran into problems, due to the rift formed between the makers of the film and the two political parties. The movie, according to the producer of the film – Harinder Sikka – was terms as a fine example of the promotion of Sikh faith. According to the Akal Takht Jathedar, the movie would be promoting Sikh faith. But, just four days before the release date, the political parties differed from their decision. Subsequently, they have formed a new committee to review the movie. Following then, in 2016, SGPC finally approved the film’s release. They have even issued an official statement, maintaining that they would back the project. The decision was short lived, as community members started raising protest against the movie.

With SC, finally ordering the movie to be released, it has to be seen how the community members from both the parties, would react to the news. It is not the first time, which SGPC has come up objecting the release of films with Sikhim and Sikh characters. In the recent past, the party has censored several movies, even Bollywood ones, including ‘A Flying Jatt’ and ‘Singh Is Bling’.
