Chunkzz Movie Review

‘Chunkzz’ as was publicized earlier, is the story of final year mechanical engineering students – mainly about Romario (Balu Varghese) and his gang. The guys were unable to cope with the fact that their department doesn’t have a single girl to boast of. Like rain to a barren land, a girl, Riya (Honey Rose) joins the department and soon was fondled by the boys’ imagination. Well, that is with the story of ‘Chunkzz’. The movie is weaved on this thread and showcases the happenings in the life of the boys, post the arrival of this girl. You can spot a whole lot of interesting characters out there in the field; for instance Sherin (Mareena) gives you a bit of a surprise.

For the last two to three years, we have seen a section of Malayalam cinema growing beyond expectations – campus entertainers catering to teenagers (precisely, upper middle class boys and girls). An interesting thing is that none has emulated the actual functioning of a real campus in Kerala; well, nothing wrong with it! Coz, such glitzy entertainers are meant to take you to a world of illusions and be happy to imagine such a life, even though knowing that you might never be able to experience it in real life. ‘Chunkzz’ did contain all that we mentioned just above.

Chunkzz is not a world where you are, but rather a world where you want to be. The movie doesn’t require you to be logically active all the time; rather they have already advised to keep logic at a bay. Packed with youthful faces, coupled with the presence of veterans the movie at times tends to go overboard. The movie gives you a kind of feeling that it’s weird living a life born from the expectations of your teachers and parents. That coupled with quite a number of comic one liners, Chunkzz sadly underlines that Omar hasn’t grown much from his ‘Happy Weddings’ days; in fact, ‘Chunkzz’ doesn’t even deliver what ‘Happy Weddings’ managed back then.

Many at a time, one would get a feeling that the story must have been tweaked numerous times, and makers fell into a pit of confusion. Since the movie is built on a castle of imagination and partying specifically becomes the centre of attraction, the script of ‘Chunkzz’ miserably fails to connect with the basic background of the characters. But, one thing for sure is that all the lead cast members have managed to give a flawless act on the big screen. Albeit Balu Varghese is the lead hero – as was projected by the story – Dharmajan, Ganapathi, Vishakh Nair were all equally given ample space to outwit others. And from ladies, Honey Rose and Mareena appeared beautiful throughout the film, while veterans like Lal or Siddique were as usual.

Music was catchy and cinematography matched with the colourful mood of the movie. You can’t really blame ‘Chunkzz’ for its lavish adult dialogues, since they have already made it clear ever since the pre production stages. After all, ‘Happy Wedding’ wasn’t much different either. Time is not too far for us having our own versions of a ‘Mastizaade’ or a ‘Grand Masti’ series (Should we need mentioning the likes of ‘American Pie’?)
