Irrfan Khan – Saba Qamar starred ‘Hindi Medium’ has exceeded the expectations of trade pundits in China. The Saket Chaudhary directorial has made a fantastic jump in box office collections, on its second Saturday. While the second Friday figure stood at $0.62M, the movie earned $1.41M at the Chinese box office on the second Saturday. With this, the total collection of the movie from Chinese box office, stands at $28.20M. The amount, if translated to Indian standards, stands at INR 184.06 Cr. Earlier, when the Friday box office figures were out, it was widely believed that the movie might not be able to breach the $30M mark at the Chinese box office. However, with the sudden upsurge in the performance, it is certain that the movie will move past the mark without any effort, by this weekend itself.
Released on April 4th in China, Hindi Medium has gone onto clock $3.68M on the opening day itself. In terms of the opening day figures of Indian movies in China, ‘Hindi Medium’ is only second to Aamir Khan starred ‘Secret Superstar’. ‘Secret Superstar’ had collected $6.4M on the opening day. ‘Hindi Medium’, when released in India in 2017, turned out to be a sleeper hit; it also toppled ‘Half Girlfriend’ in the race. While the domestic gross stood at INR 96Cr, ‘Hindi Medium’ collected INR 14Cr during its overseas run. With a final worldwide collection of INR 102.71Cr, ‘Hindi Medium’ turned out to be Irrfan Khan’s highest grosser. However, the Chinese box office has taken the movie to the next level. Inching towards INR 200Cr mark in Chinese box office itself, this Irrfan Khan movie, once again proved that content is the king.
Depicting the struggle of an Indian couple in admitting their child to an English medium school, the movie exposed the follies of the society. Earning rave reviews upon release, a sequel is in the pipeline for ‘Hindi Medium’. While Irrfan would reprise his role, the presence of Saba Qamar is not finalized. It is Homi Adajania, who is going to direct the sequel.
