Malayalam film industry has woken up today hearing the sad news of the death of actor Kollam Ajith. The actor had been undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Kochi. The available reports suggest that he had been experiencing some issues related to stomach. Doctors have confirmed the death of the actor at around 3:40 in the morning. It is been reported that the cremation would take place today itself. At the time of death, he was survived by wife Prameela; Gayathri and Sreehari are the children. Noted for his villain roles, Kollam Ajith has acted in close to 500 films and was part of a number of television serials.
Destined to be excelled in villain roles, it was towards the mid part of seventies, which Kollam Ajith had landed in Malayalam film world. When approached the great Padmarajan for becoming his assistant, the director however didn’t accommodate Ajith; in those times, Padmarajan had a number of distinguished assistants working with him. In later interviews, Ajith himself has commented about the influence of Padmarajan, in finding an actor out from him. Started off his acting career with the Padmarajan movie ‘Parannu Parannu Parannu’ in 1984, Kollam Ajith went onto be featured in most of the Padmarajan films later. In search of opportunities to end up his typecast villainous roles, the actor went onto do the main lead role in the 1989 movie ‘Agnipravesham’.
However, further then, the actor hadn’t received much opportunities to do lead roles. The result was that he continued doing villainous roles. He also made his presence felt in film direction as well. The two movies which came out under his direction are – ‘Calling Bell’ and ‘Pakal Pole’. However, his ambitious directorial project ‘Black Fire’ got shelved due to various reasons. It was the 2012 movie ‘Ardhanaari’, in which he acted last. Born to Padmanabhan – Saraswathy couple, it was due to the job of his father as a Railway Station Master, which the actor’s family settled in Kollam. Ever since he made his presence felt in movies, he was known with his name being prefixed with ‘Kollam’.
